Mobile gaming is becoming more and more commonplace but sorting through that junk is often pretty difficult. Writing full reviews for mobile games is often tedious and boring but we still want to be able to help you guys out when it comes to figuring out what is worth your time, so sorting through the crud is what Wandering Wednesdays is all about. Each week we’ll look through the app store and try out a few of the latest releases, letting you know if something is worthwhile or not. This week I ran down fleeing masses as a zombie, killed zombies in space, delivered fresh food as a scarecrow and played with ribbons. Oddly enough, the ribbons were the most fun. ~Chris
If there are two things that one can look at the iOS store and say there are an over-abundance of, it is zombie games and endless runners. I’m sure there are a a few that have already meshed the two together but this week we have Infectonator: Hot Chase, which has its own take on the concept. Instead of jumping and avoiding deadly obstacles, the object of Infectonator is to convert as many humans to zombies before your body falls apart. If you guessed that to run longer you have to eat more people you get a gold star. The game itself is mildly fun and easy to play in extremely short bursts, my early runs were averaging around a minute a piece, but aside from the 16-bit aesthetic there doesn’t seem to be much more to this one.

I did mention there is an over-abundance of zombie games on the app store right? Add Dead Effect to that list as well. My first thought when I saw the title and premise was that it was a cheap ploy to entice Dead Space and Mass Effect fans to play the game and guess what, I fell for it. Dead Effect isn’t really either of those two games, instead being a first person shooter where you shoot zombies in the head. As far as first person shooters on iOS go, Dead Effect is actually pretty solid. The virtual stick controls feel natural and shooting things works quite well. It’s nothing to write home about but if you are looking for a more serious gaming experience on iOS this week, you could do much worse than Dead Effect.

When I sat down to play Scarecrow, I wasn’t sure what to expect. After all this game is a marketing product on behalf of fast food chain, Chipolte. Once you get past the overt messaging the game has, ultimately pointing you towards Chipolte for their fresh ingredients, Scarecrow is actually a fairly competent tilt based game that will see you rescuing animals and making the world a safer place to eat. Out of all the games that I played this week, if I had to recommend one, it would be Strata. While extremely simple in its concept, Strata is amazingly elegant in its execution. There is a fantastic sense of flow to the entire game, with menus gliding into direct gameplay and vice versa. The core conceit of Strata is that there are patches and different color ribbons, with the the patches needing to match the overlaying ribbons. The catch to it all is that the top overlay needs to match the bottom patch, forcing players to eave a combination of different colored ribbons to achieve the desired effect. It’s quite fun and well worth any mobile puzzle gamer’s time. [/one_half_last]
