Not a whole lot coming out this week, unless you are into Pokemon. If Pokemon is not your thing, soak up another free week of Grand Theft Auto Online, because next week it starts to get a little crazy. ~Don P.
Pokemon X and Pokemon Y (3DS) have been all the rage this past weekend, as almost everyone on my Twitter feed (and quite possibly the world) has been talking about it. It’s the first game since Diamond/Pearl that seems to really push things further than just a few baby steps. Firstly, it’s transitioned to 3D modeling. Second, it has Mega-Evolutions, which honestly sound completely silly but since I haven’t actually played it yet, I’m not going to judge. And lastly, you get one of the original starters from Red/Blue early on. Plus there’s the new paid-service, the Pokebank. Big steps there, Nintendo, big steps.
[one_half]Hunting games, like flying games, is one of those genres I am strangly drawn to. It’s a nice change of pace to hunt something other than mouthy teenagers in Battlefield or Call of Duty, and thankfully, the animals don’t talk back. Anyhow, there’s a new hunting game this week, Cabela’s African Adventures (PS3 and Xbox 360). There doesn’t appear to be a storyline, or a linear game like one of the last hunting games I reviewed. African Adventures looks like just a regular old hunting game, which is not a bad thing at all.[/one_half]
[one_half_last]Bad Hotel (PC), an iOS port to Steam, is a rather strange looking tower-defense game. From the trailer on Steam, you take building pieces and put them together to hold off the enemy. It also has Steam Trading Cards, which I am still addicted to, so there’s that. [/one_half_last]
[one_half]Last year we had the critically acclaimed The Walking Dead game from Telltale Games, and this year they are bringing another comic book franchise to life with The Wolf Among Us (PS3 (Note: This game came out on PC and Xbox 360 last week, but it was not mentioned)). Anytime I get interested in a Telltale game, I am concerned about bugs and other nuances like frame-rate drops, but that said, their game are generally always enjoyable to me. Maybe Tony hates them, which is fine because he can have that opinion, but The Wolf Among Us should be on anyone’s radar after last years The Walking Dead.[/one_half]
[one_half_last]Goodbye Deponia (PC) is exactly what it sounds like: the end of the popular point-and-click adventure series based around Deponia. By this point, if you don’t know what it is, this particular entry isn’t for you. You should, however, go back and play the first two and then play this one, because I have heard nothing but good things about it from fans. It also has a lovely art style.[/one_half_last]
If you would have told me a few years ago when I was playing the first Skylanders game that there would have been yearly installments, I would have laughed at you. Really, I had no idea it would have had legs like this. But here we are, two years later and Skylanders Swap Force (PS3, 3DS, Xbox 360, and Wii U) is upon us. This isn’t a bad thing, mind you. My kids have recently packed up our mountain of Skylanders figures in exchange for the LEGO games, but as soon as they saw the display at Toys ‘R Us a few weeks ago, they spent the next several minutes tinkering with it and getting all sorts of excited. Swapping the tops and bottoms around is a neat idea, too, and I foresee spending a lot more money on this years entry.
