Mobile gaming is becoming more and more commonplace but sorting through that junk is often pretty difficult. Writing full reviews for mobile games is often tedious and boring but we still want to be able to help you guys out when it comes to figuring out what is worth your time, so sorting through the crud is what Wandering Wednesdays is all about. Each week we’ll look through the app store and try out a few of the latest releases, letting you know if something is worthwhile or not. This week I built my kingdom… twice, played some football and matched gems to blow stuff up. ~Chris
Despite being a noticeably gimped version, Minecraft on Android and iOS is insanely popular. The success the game has found has spawned so many titles on the app store but the port of PC game, Terraria was the first to really make me look up. Terraria is a 2D open adventure game that, like Minecraft allows players to craft things based on the materials they collect in the game world. It works great on PC (and other platforms) and 2D games generally work great on iOS so its arrival makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, like its Minecraft iOS counterpart, it is the least playable of the bunch. It’s not awful but if you are going to play one of these types of games, you should probably try out the other open adventure game to come to iOS last week.

A couple weeks ago I tried out an NFL title not named Madden. That was a mistake and while Madden NFL 25 on iOS is really just Ultimate Team mode from the console game, it is a fully playable experience. While I’d love to have a fully featured Madden on iOS (or traditional handheld devices) this is what we got and it is tailor made to the device. Offering quick, but fully featured play sessions, Madden on iOS is a hell of a lot of fun to play and, like a host of other EA produced mobile titles, it is entirely free. The one issue I have with it is that it requires a constant internet connection and my iPad is wifi only, making the game useless when I’m not at a hotspot (like in the car).[/one_half_last]
That other game is Junk Jack X. Like Terraria, Junk Jack X is an open adventure game that will see you crafting things based on materials collected in the world. Unlike Terraria though, Junk Jack X is quite fun to play. The controls are responsive, crafting is quite simple and graphically everything looks much less smushed together making for an entirely more functional, and fun, experience. While Terraria might have the name recognition, Junk Jack X is just the better game. [/one_half]
Another week, another gem matching title to play on iOS. Puzzle Trooper at least offers something different, mixing gem matching with cartoony strategic combat based on what gems are being moved. Think of it as a more American version of Puzzles and Dragons. Less dragons, more pew pew pewing.
