As many games that are coming out this week that I want, one would think it was October already. We get a serious dose of grand-strategy, some RPG goodness, some retro awesomeness, and even a co-op first person shooter. The sad thing is, there’s only a week to play them all, which is not nearly enough time..~Don P.

EuropaUniversalisIVTony

The Europa Universalis series was always a name I had heard but I never made the effort to try it. When I finally sat down to play Europa Universalis III for the first time, I was not only overwhelmed, but the dated graphics did nothing but turn me away. Fast forward half a year to when developer Paradox released the much better looking Crusader Kings II and I was on board. With Europa Universalis IV (PC), those improved visuals have carried over. I’m looking forward to the improved multiplayer, too, and hope it is easier to engage in multiplayer games than the previous Paradox strategy titles which required a lot of work arounds to launch. This will sound superficial, but the inclusion of Steam achievements has me beyond excited as well. I could go on and on, but this is supposed to be just a little preview snippet which I have already over-written for.

[one_half]DuckTalesRemastered ChrisGrowing up we had a lot of cartoon games that were simply epic. This week we get an HD remastered version of one those games as Duck Tales Remastered (PS3, PC, Wii U, and Xbox 360) hits digital stores. Screens of the game have been trickling in since the game was announced earlier this year and the graphics have certainly taken a masterful overhaul. While it’ll definitely be a trip down memory lane bouncing through the levels on Scrooges pogo cane, I really can’t wait to hear the music, as the game had one those memorable soundtracks from the NES.  [/one_half]

[one_half_last]MarioandLuigiDreamTeamWhile not Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the Mario and Luigi RPG spinoff series has been a big hit with gamers. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) is the newest offering. This being the Year of Luigi, the less famous brother takes centerstage by putting the players inside his head, which is somewhere I’m not quite sure I want to be. The series has had a strong reputation, so I’d be interested to see the improvements made this time around.[/one_half_last]

[one_half]HammerwatchBuilt with old PC visuals, Hammerwatch (PC) looks like a fancy mix of action and RPG with more emphasis on the action portion. Hammerwatch was a community voted Greenlit game, and allows up to four players to adventure together. The game looks neat, based on the trailer, but not something I would want to play without a controller as it looks rather action intensive. There’s still character development for which ever character class you choose, with a diverse skill tree. If I wasn’t already invested in so many games right now, it’d be one I would pick up and see myself doing that down the road when things slow down.[/one_half]

[one_half_last]SpaceHulkDespite THQ going under and, in effect, losing the Warhammer license, the Warhammer 40,000 franchise is not dead in the world of games. It may not have Warhammer 40K in the title, but  Space Hulk (PC) is very much a strategy game set in the Warhammer universe. It’s actually based on a board game, and has you taking on Genestealers in narrow hallways. Having a strong interest in the Warhammer world, I can’t wait to sit down with this one.[/one_half_last]

Payday2Don

When the first Payday came out, it looked and sounded great on paper. You team up with some buddies and hijack banks. However, the shooting was bad and the gameplay didn’t feel as open as advertised. Payday 2 (PS3, PC, and Xbox 360) has an opportunity to rectify the first games problems, as well as expanding their audience outside of just the Playstation 3. Payday 2 took some awards at E3 this year, and it looks like the team has added much more depth to the game. As a fan of the idea of the first game, I hope the sequel is a strong improvement because the idea sounded golden.
