There are a few times each year where I question the thought process of Hollywood Studios. With four big, wide releases coming this week, this is one of those times. ~Chris

The latest animated film from Dreamworks, Turbo, got a jump on the competition with a Wednesday release. This little film about a mutated snail enamored with racing should pull some people away from Despicable Me 2 but  I don’t think it will be the blockbuster the studio is looking for. It looks cute, and the voice talent is solid, but its about snails and NASCAR and only one of those resonates with the general populace and not so much in the movie theater.

I enjoyed the original Red, it was a fun little film where some elder acting statesmen (and women) came together to have a good time. That said Red 2 never really struck me as something that needed to happen. It did though and it debuts this week alongside everything else Hollywood had in its dump truck. The trailers at least make it look like the cast, which has been expanded a bit, is having fun with the ridiculousness of it all.  [/one_half_last]

This summer has been devoid of a big horror film. The Conjuring looks to change that.  Supposedly based on a true story, this ghostly tale looks to be amazingly creepy, which should mean for some brisk business this weekend.

Have you ever watched a trailer and asked, why does this exist? I did that last week with Grown Ups 2, and I did it again when I saw the R.I.P.D. trailer. Look, I like Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges is a film legend but damn this movie, about underworld police, looks like garbage. Imagine Men in Black 2 but worse, much worse.  [/one_half_last]
