Hollywood is not quite done with summer just yet and the next few weeks will see a pretty big rush of wide releases. The highlites this week include, Jennifer Aniston in her underwear and Matt Damon as a cyborg. ~Chris

My favorite road trip comedy is still National Lampoon’s Vacation and trailers for We’re the Millers strikes a lot of the same chords. It is without a doubt a lowbrow raunchy comedy but after a summer of overblown blockbusters and a disappointing third Hangover, I’ll take it as a palette cleanser. And there is no denying how great Jennifer Aniston looks in her underwear.

The Percy Jackson series of books is a huge success, so it wasn’t a surprise when they adapted the first book for the big screen. But a tepid domestic take on a near hundred million dollar budget made me think that we weren’t going to see anymore modern day Olympians on screen. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters just goes to show how much the international box office is now influencing filming decisions. It looks like a fun ride for slightly older kids not interested in the animated offerings and personally I think that just like cheese, mythical creatures make everything better. [/one_half_last]

Remember when Neil Blomkamp was going to direct a Halo movie but nobody wanted him because they didn’t have any idea who he was, so he took his toys and went and made District 9? I do and Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, looks like it meshes his concepts for that never made Halo movie with the themes of District 9, just on a big budget. Damon and Foster are always entertaining and Blomkamp certainly has a skill for creating gritty action sequences so even if it is a bit of a rehash, its probably going to be a fun one.

Look, I like the original Cars movie but Cars 2 was a snoozer. Planes, set in the same universe but not produced by Pixar, looks to be the same but this time around I don’t know, or care about the characters in play. Kids will probably love it and Disney will make a boatload of money off new toys, bedspreads and anything else they can emblazon a logo on but I think I’ll be skipping out on this one. My kids like mythical creatures, maybe a trip to see sea monsters is in order.  [/one_half_last]
