Gaming has seen a lot of changes in the past ten years but some of the biggest improvements have been to  multiplayer gaming. What used to be confined to our mom’s basement has now expanded to a point where you can play with someone in China with virtually no lag thanks to powerful internet speeds we have now.  But alas, there is always something special about getting a bunch of your friends together and watching them weep next to you as you claim victory. These are my personal top three games to talk trash with your friends on the couch.

Halo: Combat Evolved

Whatever your opinion is of Microsoft now, you cannot deny that Halo: Combat Evolved was a monster hit. It brought first person shooters into the forefront of gaming and paved the way for such games as Call of Duty and Battlefield to thrive on home platforms. And like any good FPS, there is always a great amount of trash talking to be said. Oh yeah, and you can’t forget about the teabagging. It didn’t matter if you were winning by a few or losing by a lot, there has never been a better way to say “fuck you” than to teabag the rotting corpse of your enemy.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Ah, the glory days of Nintendo: how I miss thee. Only Nintendo could take our most beloved characters from their best franchises and completely alter the way we looked at them. The original Super Smash Bros. was a huge hit but Melee perfected the gameplay style. While there is a substantial amount of skill involved with the game, there was also just enough luck thrown in to make you want to toss the controller across the room. All the while your dickhead friends are spamming Pikachu’s lightning attack while you frantically search for a place to hide. Assholes.

Mario Party

Nintendo strikes again. If you want to talk about a game that can absolutely infuriate you and take years off your life, then Mario Party is your game! You could be happily enjoying a couple stars lead and 5 turns later be in dead last. That was an excellent quality of  this game: no one was safe. My favorite part was when you had to put the anger aside and actually work together in the 2v2 and 3v1 mini-games.  In the end, there was no better game to get 3 friends, a few beers and all your frustrations out with than a round of Mario Party.
