At the beginning of every month, Looking Forward gives you a small sampling of what we are anticipating most. Sure, we have our small list of things we intend to play or watch each month, but when it boils down to it what are we wanting the most as the month starts? Read on to find out.

(Note: Yes, we realize the timing is a little off this month, as two of the games mentioned came out on September 3rd.)

Diablo III

Most of my experience playing the original Diablo, and when I fell in love with the series, was playing on the Playstation 1 over at a friends’ house. I ended up playing the sequel on PC because it never made its way to consoles, but would have enjoyed it more on a TV with a controller. The Diablo series was what started me down this path of being such a loot whore. I have yet to play Diablo III, but there have been a few major games that have really improved on the formula Blizzard started; most notably the Champions of Norrath series on Playstation 2. It will be great to play the latest game by the Forefathers of Loot, though, and doing so with a controller on my big, HD television is going to be grand. Bring on the loot!

Outlast

I saw Outlast at PAX East and after playing the first fifteen minutes, knew immediately that this game was going to be something I needed to play. The demo was the most tense gaming experience I had played since Amnesia and outclassed everything else that had the nerve to call itself survival horror over the last few years. Like most horror titles, it is a game that is best probably played in the dark but I have a feeling more than a few players are going to wuss out and turn on the lights. I might even be one of them if the game can live up to the promise it showed when I first saw it and that would make it something truly special.

Total War: Rome II

I am the luckiest strategy gamer on earth.  My two favorite franchises both receive new entries this year, on consecutive months no less, with last month’s Europa Universalis IV and now Total War: Rome 2. Rome: Total War was largely regarded as the best game in the series (and, by some, me included,  as one of the best games of all time). Still, it released nearly a decade ago, making an update not simply desirable but also necessary. Revisiting my favorite era in history is an opportunity I relish, and I am excited to see what upgrades Creative Assembly has over both the original and the experience from the series’ latest entry, Shogun 2. Let’s cross the Rubicon on September 3rd and see who can stand up to our might!
