With just a couple months left in the year, things are getting pretty interesting on the power rankings but Titanfall and Destiny are still leading the charge.
8t. Wolfenstein: The New Order (9 points, no position change) – Refreshingly old-school shooter sensibilities, a meaty single-player campaign, and a surprisingly gripping story keep Wolfenstein: The New Order hanging on in the top 10.
8t. Pokemon: Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire (9 points, new) – So far, Pokemon remakes have always been great, enhancing old games with new mechanics. Seeing all of these new Mega evolutions getting announced keeps making me want the Ruby / Sapphire remakes more and more.
8t. Divinity: Original Sin (9 points, no change) – Divinity: Original Sin continues to pump out the content, having just received a new free expansion. The team behind the game has said they’ll be supporting this title into the distant future, so look for the year’s best RPG so far to get even better.
7. Assassin’s Creed Unity (12 points, -1 position change) – They may have pushed this French Revolution stab-fest back a couple of weeks, but I’m still primed to assassinate some Royalist scum and seize power come this November. I mean, you know, for the greater good.
6. Civilization: Beyond Earth (13 points, -1 position change) – Civ: Beyond Earth’s release date fast approaches, an October launch for what may be the strategy game of the year. With a fully-optimized Civilization V engine and a completely new setting, this title is coming on fast and I can’t wait.
5. Mario Kart 8 (15 points, -2 position change) – Recently announced DLC from outside the Mushroom Kingdom is keeping Mario Kart 8 in the spotlight and reminding us that it’s one of the very best games of the year.
4. Alien: Isolation (16 points, no change, 1 first place vote) – Most Alien games have been action games based on James Cameron’s action-heavy sequel Aliens. By taking inspiration from the original film, Alien Isolation looks to shift the gameplay toward survival horror, with you desperately trying to avoid the title character.
3. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition (20 points, +4 position change) – If anything Diablo III may win an award for being the most addictive game of the year.
2. Destiny (34 points, no change, 1 first place vote) – Bungie’s anticipated shooter is here now and we’ve got mixed feelings but it is still inhabiting our #2 slot on the rankings. Will it next month?
1. Titanfall (39 points, no change, 3 first place votes) – I’m beginning to think that Titanfall’s dominance at the top of this list is a mix of it delivering what it promised and a lot of other things failing to.
If you had to predict your top 10 list at the end of 2014, what would it look like? Let us know in the comments below.
