The summer is in full swing and this week sees the release of another pair of heavy hitters as well as a couple limited screeners. ~Chris
If you had told me a couple years ago that Will Smith would be starring in a sci-fi summer blockbuster and it was probably going to tank I’d have told you that you were crazy. But that is exactly what I expect to happen with Smith’s After Earth, directed by director M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan hasn’t had a quality film in over a decade and he has transformed from one of the most sought after creator/directors to being one of the most maligned. It’s being critically pounded and while Smith’s star power should help its chances, it faces tough competition from current box office champ, Fast & Furious 6, as well as Star Trek, which is in the same genre. Now You See Me is classic counter programming as nothing quite like it is out in theaters right now. It has a lot going for it, including an ensemble cast full of talented people (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine). And its magic/heist premise has a distinct Ocean’s Eleven feel to it. If I had to choose one wide release film to go see this week, this would be it but I have a feeling it is going to go buy largely unnoticed against the heavy hitters already on screens.
