Suppose, like me, you decided to get an Xbox One. I’ve got nothing again PS4 (and will in fact pick one up in the not-so-distant future), but I went with the lovely Xbone. Now, the PS4 launches tomorrow, and I find myself consumed with anticipation and jealousy. WHY ARE YOU FIRST, PS4? WHY?!

And so, I need a distraction. Thankfully, game publishers saw fit to grace us with some excellent distractions to get to release day.

X-COM: Enemy Within

Enemy Within

Thanks be to 2K, for offering an expansion to my 2012 game of the year at the exact moment of my greatest need.  Enemy Within offers players the chance to partake in more fully realized versions of the customization and personal relationships with soldiers that made the original release so addicting. The chance to hop back into some new battlefields (refighting over the same ground over and over grew stale after a while) with new enemies, new troops and new abilities is one worth salivating over. And the best thing: it released only a few short days ago. Have at it.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag

I can’t blame anyone who was down on the series after the mess that AC3 made. The new effort, however, is a worthy entry, and with the naval aspects, may be the best game in the series. No, it’s not really about assassinating people anymore, but the chance to sail the high seas in your own, upgradable and customizable ship, attacking trade vessels, warships and taking booty is an opportunity no gamer should miss. This is a pirate game, through and through, and while you may be waiting for the next-gen versions, I must recommend you walk the plank now and pick up this title as soon as possible.

Lego: Marvel Superheroes

Lego Marvel Super Heroes

Your brain might be telling you: oh, God, another Lego game. This may be true, but Marvel Superheroes is by far the best effort in the series. Each character feels unique and has a personality all their own. The ability to unlock dozens of characters you never wanted to play felt overly abundant in previous games. Here, you’re unlocking every superhero you could imagine, and the ability to play as any of them, to enjoy their powers and see what they can do is one you’ll indulge in again and again. What’s more, the Xbox One version was delayed, so now’s a good time to switch to one of the other versions and play it now. You won’t be disappointed.

In the throes of deep excitement and anticipation, what are you playing to distract yourself?
