I originally played Super Lucky’s Tale when it was released on Xbox One. It was a cute little 3D platformer that was reminiscent of the late 90s switch to 3D. Nothing special but enjoyable enough for the handful of hours it requires of you to play through it. So, when I saw New Super Lucky’s Tale was releasing on Game Pass I was mildly excited.

Turns out maybe I shouldn’t have been.

Don’t take that to mean that New Super Lucky’s Tale is bad, it’s not. But what it is, is essentially the same game as Super Lucky’s Tale. It is more akin to a remix of a song. It tells the same story, adds in the DLC world to the story (probably where they were originally intended), the DLC challenge area to complete after the credits, and a fresh 1000 achievement points to earn. But it’s really just more Super Lucky’s Tale, it’s not really new.

The game features the same levels, a smart mix of 3D exploration levels and 2D platforming levels, although I think some may have been cut from this release because even with the DLC added and the after credit challenge levels, I breezed through this in less time. The added in DLC world, Gilly Island, is fine, as is the after credits challenge area, Foxington. I will say though that the platforming challenges in Foxington are excellent and actually will challenge players a bit more than the rest of the game.

In the end, if you liked Super Lucky’s Tale, this is that game but “complete” I guess. It is still cute, simple, but mostly forgetful fun. I wouldn’t object to a true sequel though, I’m always down for some fun platforming.

3*
