Each month, Critically Sane will select, from the releases in that month, a game that is worthy of our prestigious game of the month award, and sometimes, a few runners up that are worthy of recognition. These games will form the basis of our GOTY discussion later on in the year. Here are our July selections.
Game of the Month: Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition
It might seem a little odd that Diablo III is our game of the month. After all, it did first come out over two years ago. But while two years ago, Diablo III was merely a good game, The Ultimate Evil Edition is a great game. No game this year, except for maybe Titanfall and Destiny, has captured the majority of our staff’s attention like Diablo III on Xbox One has and the experience is just as great on the PS4. Blizzard has done a magical job of adapting the mouse destroying loot fest to controllers delivering one of the tightest gameplay experiences of the year. Add in the fact that there is tons and tons of stuff to do in the game, be it the standard campaign, running bounties in Adventure mode, or surviving Nephalem Rifts filled with killer Care Bears and unicorns on one of the 10 difficulty levels, and you have a game that over delivers on its promises and the best game of August.
Runner Up: Madden NFL 15
EA’s recent Madden efforts came to a head with the best Madden effort in nearly a decade. The game’s emphasis on new players makes it easy to hop into Madden for the first time, while teaching players real-world football concepts in ways that even veteran players will appreciate. Ultimate Team is heavily upgraded into a mode that is well worth your time and money, and a slew of changes to the Connected Franchise mode make this game a must-purchase for series fans and people who like games in general.
